REQUEST Briefs Diplomatic Community on Proposed “LGBT Propaganda” Amendments

Today, the LGBTQIA+ human rights initiative REQUEST, together with the Delegation of the European Union to Kazakhstan, held a briefing for members of the diplomatic community regarding the current developments surrounding the proposed amendments introducing a ban on so-called “LGBT propaganda”.

The meeting brought together 22 diplomats representing EU Member States, as well as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Switzerland.

During the briefing, REQUEST provided detailed information on the current situation, our ongoing advocacy efforts, and an expert analysis of the proposed legislative amendments. Participants also discussed the potential implications of the amendments for freedom of expression, civil society, and the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in Kazakhstan.

The discussion was active and substantive, with diplomats raising questions and engaging in a dialogue about the broader human rights context and possible developments.

REQUEST continues to engage with international partners and diplomatic missions to ensure that the situation remains visible at the international level and that developments affecting fundamental rights in Kazakhstan are closely monitored.
