First Queer Rights Talks in Astana: Discussing the Outcome of the Petition on the “LGBT Propaganda” Ban

On September 13 in Astana, we held our first discussion on the outcome of the petition calling for a ban on “LGBT propaganda” as part of the Queer Rights Talks series.

The outcome of the petition suggests that no immediate strict bans or restrictions are expected in the near future. At the same time, it is important to understand that during this period authorities are likely to continue studying issues related to the LGBTQIA+ community. For the community, this may create an opportunity to maintain active engagement, develop arguments and research to support its position, and strengthen dialogue with both the public and state institutions.

Participants were highly engaged in the discussion. A significant part of the conversation focused on identifying key needs and outlining practical steps for future advocacy, particularly in the areas of information work, community mobilization, and independent research.

We plan to continue the Queer Rights Talks series on a monthly basis and in different formats to address the key issues and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in Kazakhstan. Follow our updates and register for upcoming events.
