May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)

This day reminds us that human rights are universal and must not depend on a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

The global IDAHOBIT theme for 2026 is “At the Heart of Democracy.” It highlights that respect for human rights, equality and the protection of LGBTQIA+ people are not a “separate agenda”, but an essential part of a democratic society, the rule of law and inclusive participation of all people in public life.

In Kazakhstan, the LGBTQIA+ community continues to face systemic challenges. There is still no comprehensive legal protection against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). People continue to face violence, stigma, threats, denial of access to services, and pressure in education, at work and in digital spaces.

The entry into force of the so-called “LGBT propaganda” ban raises additional concern. Such measures create conditions for censorship, restrictions on freedom of expression, pressure on civil society and further discrimination. International human rights mechanisms have repeatedly emphasized that such approaches contradict the principles of equality, non-discrimination and freedom of expression.

REQUEST reaffirms its commitment to protecting the dignity, equality and safety of all people regardless of SOGI. We continue working toward a more inclusive, safe and just society where human rights are not subject to exceptions.

Solidarity, visibility and human rights matter.

The date was established in 2004 to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases on 17 May 1990. Today, this day is dedicated to protecting the dignity, equality and safety of LGBTQIA+ people around the world.
